We have received updated information on the current Canine Influenza outbreak:
The influenza that has been in the US since 2004, and for which the vaccine was developed is the H3N8 strain. According to researchers at both Cornell University and the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Lab this outbreak is caused by the H3N2 strain which has not previously been found in North America. It is believed to have come from Asia. It is currently not know if the available vaccine will have any effect on this strain. The H3N2 strain has also been known to cause respiratory illness in cats. Researchers are working to develop a test that is specific for this strain. The current testing used in many labs cannot detect it.
